Heat pumps have become increasingly popular across the UK as homeowners look for more efficient, lower-carbon ways to heat their properties.

However, many people are surprised to learn that a modern heat pump can do far more than simply provide heating during the winter months.

With the correct design and installation, a heat pump can also provide cooling during the summer, helping to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures throughout the year. As temperatures continue to rise across the South of England, cooling is becoming an increasingly important consideration for homeowners looking to improve comfort, sleep quality and overall quality of life.

How Heat Pumps Provide Cooling

A heat pump works by transferring heat from one place to another. During winter, it extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it into your home. In summer, the process can be reversed.

Rather than bringing heat into the property, the heat pump removes heat from inside the home and transfers it outside. This allows the system to lower indoor temperatures in a highly efficient manner, often using significantly less electricity than traditional cooling systems.

For homeowners looking to create a comfortable living environment all year round, this dual-purpose capability makes heat pumps an attractive long-term investment. However, there is an important consideration that is often overlooked.

Why Cooling Can't Simply Be Added to a Standard Heating System

Many homeowners assume that if a heat pump can produce chilled water, that water can simply be circulated through their existing radiators or heating pipework to cool the house.

Unfortunately, it is not that straightforward.

When water temperatures are reduced to provide meaningful cooling, the surfaces of the pipework and emitters can become colder than the dew point of the surrounding air. When this occurs, moisture in the air condenses onto the cold surfaces, just as water droplets form on the outside of a cold glass on a warm day.

If cooling is introduced into a standard heating circuit that has not been designed for it, condensation can develop throughout the system.

This can lead to several serious problems, including:

This circuit uses specially insulated pipework designed to prevent condensation from forming on external surfaces. The insulation creates a protective barrier between the chilled pipework and the warmer air within the property.

A dedicated cooling system also allows for the correct control strategy, temperature management and condensate handling required for reliable operation.

By designing a separate cooling circuit from the outset, homeowners can enjoy effective summer cooling without introducing moisture-related risks into the building.


Fan Coils: The Best Way to Deliver Cooling

Why Cooling Should Be Considered at the Heat Pump Design Stage

One of the most important messages is that cooling should be considered when the heat pump is first being designed and installed.

Retrofitting cooling after the installation has been completed is often more complex and more expensive than incorporating it from the outset.

When cooling is included during the design phase, the installer can:

  • Size the heat pump appropriately
  • Design dedicated cooling pipework routes
  • Specify the correct insulation requirements
  • Plan locations for fan coil units
  • Incorporate condensate drainage
  • Configure controls for both heating and cooling operation

Even if cooling is not required immediately, future-proofing the system can make it far easier and more cost-effective to add cooling at a later date.

Where battery storage is included, excess electricity generated during the day can be stored and used later in the evening when the house may still require cooling.

For many homeowners, cooling can be provided at very little cost during the summer months because much of the energy is being generated on-site. In some situations, cooling can be close to free during periods of strong solar production.
